The Best Places for Family Photos on Kauaʻi
If you're planning a family trip to Kauaʻi, you may already be imagining the photographs—bare feet in the sand, little ones running toward the ocean, lush green mountains in the distance, and that beautiful golden island light.
Kauaʻi has no shortage of incredible places for family photos, but the best location isn't necessarily the most famous one. It depends on your family, the ages of your kids, the time of year, the weather, and the kind of experience you want to remember.
After photographing families around Kauaʻi, especially here on the North Shore, these are a few of my favorite places for family photography.
Hanalei Bay
Best for: Classic Kauaʻi scenery, families of all ages, mountains, beach and that unmistakable North Shore feeling.
If you're looking for classic Kauaʻi family photography with those iconic North Shore views, Hanalei Bay is one of my favorite choices.
If you picture Kauaʻi in your mind, there's a good chance it looks a little like Hanalei.
The sweeping bay, lush green mountains and beautiful shoreline make an incredible backdrop, but what I love most is that there is room to move.
We can walk, play, explore, snuggle and let the kids be themselves instead of spending the whole session trying to get everyone to look at the camera.
Some of my favorite family photographs happen in those in-between moments—the laughter, the little interactions and the things nobody planned.
Tunnels Beach (MĀkua)
Best for: Dramatic mountain views, adventurous families and a wild Kauaʻi feel.
If you're dreaming of photographs that feel a little more adventurous and cinematic, Tunnels Beach is hard to beat.
Tunnels Beach is one of my favorite choices for families who want their photographs to feel lush, natural and distinctly Kauaʻi.
The mountains rise dramatically behind the beach, surrounded by lush tropical greenery and the Pacific Ocean. It's one of those places where the landscape does a lot of the storytelling for you. And then there's the weather. Clouds roll through. The light changes. Sometimes the rain passes and leaves behind the most incredible skies—or even a rainbow.
Those moments can't really be planned. And that's part of the magic.
Anini Beach
Best for: Young families, a relaxed feel, soft tropical scenery and lots of variety within one location.
Anini has a quieter, more tucked-away feeling than some of Kauaʻi's more recognizable beaches, and I love how much variety you can find along the scenic beach road.
It's a beautiful choice if you want your photographs to feel natural, tropical and a little more intimate, with plenty of variety and that relaxed North Shore feeling.
There are so many little areas to choose from depending on the feel we're looking for—soft sandy stretches, lava rock, tucked-away coves, palms and tropical greenery, and even beautiful distant views toward the Kilauea Lighthouse.
Sometimes the most meaningful photographs aren't the ones with the biggest mountain or the most recognizable beach. Sometimes it's simply your family walking together. Your kids running ahead. A little hand reaching for yours. The ordinary moments that become extraordinary when you look back on them years later.
So, What's the Best Location for Your Family?
The best location isn't necessarily the one with the most spectacular view.
It's the one that lets your family be your family.
That's why I don't have one location I recommend to everyone.
A family with toddlers may need something completely different from a family with teenagers. Maybe you're looking for dramatic mountains. Maybe you'd rather have a quiet beach. Maybe your kids need space to run and explore.
I'LL HELP YOU CHOOSE A LOCATION BASED ON YOUR FAMILY, WHERE YOU'RE STAYING, THE TIME OF YEAR, THE WEATHER AND THE KIND OF PHOTOGRAPHS YOU'RE DREAMING ABOUT.
And once we're there, you don't need to know how to pose.
I'll guide you when you need direction and give you space when the best thing to do is simply be together.
BECAUSE THE LANDSCAPE IS BEAUTIFUL, BUT YOU ARE THE STORY.
